So, conventional wisdom says, "You've got to spend money to make money." You know this and you're prepared to do so to outfit your urgent care center. But wouldn't it be better if you could spend less money and start making money sooner?
Of course it would. Two of the best ways you can do that are choosing the right equipment and purchasing all of it at the same time, from the same vendor. We'll get to bundle pricing in a moment, but first, let's talk about the pieces you'll need:
X-ray is the backbone of any imaging operation. Because of the typical demands of an urgent care setting, we'd recommend a new, clinical-grade, analog rad room.
Frankly, much of the hospital-grade equipment from the "Big 3" is overkill for a clinic. Why pay for power and capabilities you won't use? And, for just a little more than a refurbished system from the same brand, you can have a brand-new one. Once you factor in costs like delivery and warranty, the difference could be as little as $25,000 refurbished vs. $35,000 new.
For those of you who were wondering why, in this digital age, we recommended an analog room above, here's your answer: for the volume of patients that the average urgent care center serves, the combination of an analog room and a CR reader provides sufficient speed. Hospitals or clinics with unusually high traffic may want to consider digital panels or a factory-born DR room, but in most cases, choosing a CR can meet urgent care needs without the extra up-front costs of these technologies. On top of that, should your volume increase later on, converting to DR is a relatively simple upgrade and your CR becomes backup.
Mini PACS System
A mini PACS system offers the networking and storage convenience of a full PACS system on a scale that is more commensurate with the actual needs of a clinical setting. As with all the other equipment we're addressing in this article: Why pay for features you won't use? Hospital-scale features definitely fall into that category.
X-Ray Equipment Package Pricing
Below are two examples of X-ray equipment packages that bundle image acquisition (a brand-new rad room), processing (a reconditioned CR reader), and storage (a new mini PACS) into a single price:
|Example Package 1||Example Package 2|
|TOTAL (+install & 1-year warranty): $59,000||TOTAL (+install &1-year warranty): $65,000|
These examples reflect Block Imaging's pricing at the time of this article's publication. Prices on packages like these will vary by vendor and depending on which models you choose, but the principal is the same: buying in bundles can get you scanning (and earning) faster than a piece-by-piece purchase.
