The Problem with Radiation Safety Training

If you work around X-ray equipment, you've been there: radiation saftey training. It probably wasn't convenient, it probably took longer than it needed to, and you probably got reminder emails every week for two months to make sure you were at the session. As inconvenient and moderately annoying as all this was for those of you who were simply attending, we're willing to bet it was FAR more inconvenient for the administrator who had to put it all together.

Fortunately, there is a way for everyone to get the training they need to be safe and to be compliant with state and federal regulations while side-stepping all the problems of traditional radiation safety courses: Online radiation safety training.

How to Adjust the Steering on an OEC 9800 C-Arm

Do the wheels shimmy? Does the handle wiggle? Is it just getting harder to make turns? We're not talking about the tie rods on your '03 Ford Focus (there's a different blog for that). We're talking about the chain-driven steering mechanism on your OEC 9800 C-arm.

Every so often, the steering linkage in a 9800 can get a little slack in it. When this happens, it takes longer for the steering handle to engage and makes your steering sloppy. Fortunately, adjusting the chain back to its proper tension is a relatively simple task that could potentially be taken care of by your on-site maintenance team.

See the video below for a step-by-step demonstration of how an OEC 9800 steering chain can be adjusted to proper tension:

HIPAA compliance and limited onboard storage are part of the day-to-day reality of using a C-arm. Because of this, one question we get frequently is, "How do I delete the patient data from my C-arm?" We already went ahead and showed how to do this on an OEC 9800 but, to make sure that all you OEC 9900 users are up to speed, we figured we'd lay things out for your equipment as well.

Look below for a pictorial guide to the three easy steps that will clear the patient data from your OEC 9900:

Hologic DEXA: Shutting Down Safely

You wouldn't go for a long run without doing a cool-down at the end, would you? Well, maybe you would, but you'd be a lot more sore the next day. Of course, there are those of you who are saying to yourselves, "I'd probably skip the long run altogether." If you fall in the latter category, I would encourage you to stop over-thinking the analogy and work with me a little.

For so many things in life, it pays to slow down a little and get started the right way: Begin your day with a good breakfast. Check your tire pressure before a road trip. Preheat your oven before you go throwin' that DiGiorno in there!

When it comes to DEXA scanners for bone density studies, there's no exception.

If you're new to DEXA, use the video library below to make sure you're kicking off your scanning sessions the recommended way. You can prevent failed QC tests, blown fuses, and even serious damage to your DEXA system's components.
