pet-scan-reimbursement-cuts

Recently, a proposal through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recommended a change to the 2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) that would reduce reimbursement for cardiac PET scan procedures by 80%. While the proposed change doesn't prevent anyone from continuing to offer cardiac PET services, it does drop reimbursement to a level well below what's needed to maintain a viable cardiac imaging service, a move that will force many providers out of the market and eliminate access to service for the majority of patients.

This news raises several questions. What is CMS thinking with this proposal? What will patients do if the proposal is accepted? And what can be done about it? We'll answer these questions below to shed more light on the situation and what's to be done as CMS administrators make their deliberations.

how-to-save-on-imaging-service

Nobody likes to place calls for medical imaging equipment service. We’d all be much happier if every CT, C-arm, or digital mammo we ever bought worked correctly, 100% of the time, for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, we live in a world of wear and tear, acts of God, and outright boneheaded moments that create the need for maintenance and repairs.

When these things happen, if you haven’t purchased a service contract to cover your equipment, you’ll be calling in service engineers on a time and materials basis. The price on this type of service can vary widely depending on hourly rates and parts needs. There can also be additional down time costs, depending on the engineer’s availability.

While we do offer time and materials service and do our best to keep the costs to a minimum, we can’t honestly speak for other companies in the business. As a safeguard in these situations, here are some tips to help you make sure you’re getting the best value out of time and materials service calls.

There is no doubt that DEXA bone densitometry has a significant impact on the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the management of osteoporosis care. Still, a challenge remains in finding ways to balance the clinical and economic utility of the modality as reimbursements continue to hover in the basement.

For those looking to serve patients by adding or upgrading a current bone density system, leasing is an option that can help strike the aforementioned balance by spreading the capital cost of DEXA equipment across 36, 48, or even 60 months.

The average monthly lease rates outlined in the chart below include refurbished GE and Hologic DEXA bone density systems.

Precision-500D-Aurora-vs-Odetta

If you're considering a GE Precision 500D R/F room, you're looking at one of the most reliable workhorse systems in the entire imaging field. It's worth noting, however, that not all Precision 500D units are the same. In 2006, several years into the P500D production run, GE updated the system and their value increased significantly.

We'll share with you here how earlier P500D systems, known as "Odetta 500D" differ from later systems, known as "Aurora 500D", and what the difference means for R/F users.
