Choosing the Best CR System Based on Throughput

CR System Throughput Speed

There are so many different Computed Radiography systems out there it’s hard to know which one is best for your site, especially since you’re way too busy to research all those models by yourself. But, hard though it may be, the research HAS to be done. Nothing is more important to an equipment purchase than getting the right tool for the job. You wouldn't clean your windshield with steel wool, Sylvester Stallone wouldn’t film Rocky 7 with an iPhone, and a conscientious facility like yours wouldn’t be satisfied with any CR system but the model with the best balance of cost and throughput.

That said, because we are in the CR business, we’d like to show you a comparison that might help take some of the research load off your plate. But before we do, here’s a little context:


  • There are more brands out there than we can cram into a single chart. We’ll focus on the four largest CR system manufacturers: Fuji, Konica, Kodak/Carestream, and AGFA. We’ll also be narrowing the field to models that are common to the used market.
  • Throughput times vary by model size and type. Some CR systems are single feed while others are multiple feed.
  • CRs vary in size and footprint. If space is a concern in your facility, remember that the fastest CR and the most compact CR might not be the same model.
  • If you need a mammo-capable CR, you may have to sacrifice some throughput for compatibility’s sake.


Alright, now that the stage is set, below are the throughput numbers on some of the most popular used CR system models. These numbers are based on using standard 14 X 17 cassettes. Actual throughput may vary when non-standard sizes are used:

Now that the numbers are out there, I’d like to return to my earlier statement about balance. With our cooling economic climate and the political tumult rolling down off Capitol Hill, this can be more difficult than ever to achieve.

Searching for your next CR system on the used equipment market is a great place to start. You can easily save 30% or more off the brand-new prices of most CR units. However, there is a little more homework that will need to be done if you truly want the best CR fit. Talk to your doctors, talk to your techs, look at your patient schedules over the last six months. How many scans did you actually do in an average week? Having your site-specific averages in hand will go a long way toward keeping you from being oversold. There’s no sense in buying the Ferrari of throughput when the Dodge Charger will do.

If you still feel the need to do some more research, we don’t blame you. Both the benefits and detriments of having a lot of options are pretty clear in this scenario.
