Simplifying Big Decisions About Refurbished C-arms
If you’re considering buying a refurbished C-arm, chances are this is not the first place you looked. You went elsewhere and had your head jammed with questions, specifications, and OEM sales lingo and now your skull is about to burst. Sound familiar? Well, we have good news and bad news for you. The bad news: we’re a little hurt that you didn’t come to us first. The good news: we forgive you, and we want to help you boil this task down to three criteria. So breathe deeply and read on!
Know the C-arm unit you are buying, what it is designed for, and what it is capable of. A practice that is only doing spinal injections will likely not need 3D Reconstruction or Neurovascular options. Chances are you’ll pay for the difference. Don’t be oversold but on the same token don’t be undersold. Even if the unit that is being presented to you has the options on the quote or brochure, make sure they are enabled and ready to be used! Enabling or upgrading software/hardware options after installation can be very expensive.
All C-arms need service eventually. The need could be as small as a PM or it could be much more serious. Make sure the specific unit you are buying can be supported by the vendor or by an engineering group relatively close to you. Most of the smaller vendors do not have the infrastructure to back the warranties they give you on paper. Ask for references from their pool of past customers. Take your sales rep to task on the finer points of their service offerings. What happens if a $20,000 X-ray tube blows on day 28 of a 30 day warranty?
This criterion can be both the most alluring and the most deceiving to work on with a vendor. The eternal question: Is the lowest price really the best deal? Not necessarily. There are many corners that can be cut on C-arm prices that can seriously impact quality. In a market where every dollar counts and every penny is pinched, we would still urge you to consider quality as the highest priority. Look back at the other two criteria and ask yourself: Am I sacrificing functions that I want and reliable service to save a few thousand bucks? If the answer is yes, find the middle ground. Those sacrifices are likely to cost you everything you may have saved and more on the back end.
